India’s Paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu won Gold in Men’s T42 High Jump final at the ongoing Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. He leaped 1.89m to clinch the top place on the big stage.
The champion from a village near Salem suffered an accident that crushed his right knee at the age of five. He has been participating in the sport after changing tracks from Volleyball in his early days and is ranked world No.1 at the moment.
This is India’s third Paralympic Gold after Murlikant Petkar (Swimming, 1972) and Devendra Jhajharia (Javelin Throw, 2004). Bhati Varun Singh of India won the Bronze medal in the same category achieving 1.86m.
